We fear change

The townspeople protested,
The building of a mosque.
The local councillors,
Were rescued by police.
Why?
I pondered.

We proudly sing,
"To those that come across the sea,
We've boundless plains to share."
Yet we are very selective.
Better you come by plane, with a visa.
Should we accept those who thrust themselves on our shore,
Ahead of those rotting in refugee camps?

Per capita we permanently settle the most refugees of any country.
Still our tens of thousands,
Is a drop,
Compared to the ocean,
Flooding into refugee camps.

Why do we have this debate,
When there is a humanitarian crisis of such a scale?

We fear anything foreign,
And we fear change.
